ΤΟ C. F. A.

September 22nd.

Mr. N. S. Brown

October 2nd.

With reference to my telegram No. 94

of the 3rd October I have the honour to enclose

an extract from the Hongkong Daily Press giving

a detailed account of the piracy of the British

steamer "Anking".

2.

This vessel belonging to the China

Navigation Company Limited (Messrs. Butterfield

and Swire), left Singapore on September 23rd for

Hoihow, Swatow, Amoy and Hongkong. The pirates

embarked as passengers, possibly at Amoy on the

previous downward trip and reembarked at Singapore.

I have no definite proof of this and I have so far

seen no official police report from Hongkong on the case,

but the supposition is likely in view of the warning,

referred to later, that a pirate gang had proceeded to

Amoy with the intention of capturing a ship. The

His Majesty's Minister,

Peking.
